Budget is the first step you need to decide.
1 point and shot (can't change lense)
2 DSRL (DX or FX)
3 mirroless (can change lense)
Camera body is not that expensive. Lenses is going to kill you.

Now in the DLSR the mirrorless is very popular as they are much lighter and the lens are compatible with various bodies

You should go try them!

Personally I like Nikon better than Canon.
Try D7000 (DX) or D800 (FX).
(D600 is a FX camera but the spec is not higher than D7000)
Once you decide the body. Then you can start shop for the lenses.
