事實上，以現今科技，即使是一部智能手機、一輛巴士，只要能夠接收得到GPS（或電訊公司發射站）的訊號，訊號又沒有地形或建築物阻擋接收，而系統本身又沒有被關閉，就已經可以計算得出大概位置。不少行山失蹤市民都是以這種辦法被尋獲，而巴士公司亦有利用GPS系統得知巴士的大概位置。

  G: ]$ e9 o# K/ Y. {至於在天空中的客機，只要定位和資料傳送系統沒被關掉，理論上都能夠透過GPS系統定位，甚至有網站及智能電話程式配合Google地圖提供客機的位置資料。再者，作為民航客機而非軍用飛機，亦沒有必要隱藏位置資料，因此根本毋須讓機組人員有控制權，選擇開啟還是關閉傳送實時位置的系統。

不過，有關的「推算」，由於掌握的資料所限，因而是有可能出現誤差的，包括有關方面在計算時，是假設飛機以自動巡航速度即大概350節（約合648公里/時）飛行。而由於按MH370的位置和剩餘的油量，英國空難調查處認為，在偏遠的南印度洋海域中，油量可達範圍內根本沒有可供飛機降落的島嶼，故認為飛機極大可能墜毀，而馬來西亞政府隨後更單方面宣布飛機確認墜毀這個其實是推斷出來的事實。
