no icon next to start... help help

usually no icon when no files are open.. but when you open a file or internet, there would some icon next to start to show u wt u hv open.. however i hv no icon next to mine.. how can i fix it...
if don't kow wt i mean, i can send a pic to u or whatever  info u need..... just help me plzzzz
