WIMBLEDON, England -- Defending champion SerenaWilliams was bumped up to No. 7 in the Wimbledon seedings -- 19 placesabove her world ranking -- on Wednesday, a position that will allow herto avoid playing the highest-ranked players until at least thequarter-finals.
Williams won her 13th Grand Slam title last year at the All EnglandClub, but then stepped on broken glass, eventually leading to bloodclots on her lungs, and was out of action for nearly a year. Shereturned to competitive tennis on Tuesday at Eastbourne, coming backfrom a set down to beat Tsvetana Pironkova 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
She was originally seeded No. 8, but the withdrawal of second-seeded Kim Clijsters moved the rest of the field up one spot.
"Listen I don't ask for much. I would have been happy with 25,because I'm going to be in there fighting for every point and foreverything," Williams said. "It's doesn't matter where I'm seeded. I'mjust going to give it 200 per cent like everyone else in the draw."

On the men's side, defending champion Rafael Nadal was seeded No. 1,followed by Novak Djokovic at No. 2, Roger Federer at No. 3 and AndyMurray at No. 4 -- in line with their rankings.8 w/ U) w' P1 M- d, z% S8 g2 o" l
Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., is seeded No. 31.

For Federer, it's the first time he's been outside the top twoseedings at Wimbledon since 2003, the year he won the first of fivestraight titles at the grass-court Grand Slam.
Since Serena's injury, she has dropped to No. 26 in the WTArankings. If Wimbledon organizers had seeded her according to herranking, the four-time Wimbledon champion could have come up against atop player in the third round.# `: {( l8 w5 L5 f2 E) R" V) y

"I didn't hope anything at all. I just hoped to be able to play,"said Venus, who beat Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-2 Wednesday to reach thequarter-finals at Eastbourne. "That's it. At the top of the women's seeding list is top-ranked CarolineWozniacki. "I'm very disappointed to have to withdraw from Wimbledon afterinjuring my foot again," Clijsters said. "At this moment I feelfrustrated that it has to happen now before one of my favouritetournaments. I've always enjoyed being a part of the Wimbledonatmosphere but I have no other choice now but to rest, recover and tonot play tennis for a few weeks."
