German newspaper Bild claim that Arsenal are preparing a bid of €20million for Hungarian striker Adam Szalai, of Bundesliga club Mainz.
The 25-year-old, formerly of the Real Madrid B team, where he was quite highly-rated, has 11 goals so far this season and has also reportedly attracted the interests of Wolsburg and Borussia Dortmund.
The club insist they have received no bids, but would consider offers of around 20 million.
When Szalai himself was asked about the interest from Arsenal, he apparently said with a smile on his face:
“I know nothing.”
Arsenal’s search for a striker has been well known, with the club apparently still seeking to replace the goals of Robin van Persie.
Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski have done quite well, but backup is supposedly wanted, especially as Theo Walcott’s future remains up in the air.
Szalai has obviously impressed in Germany, but it might be a bit early in his career to tell if he’s really top quality.
He’s been at a big club in Real Madrid already and failed to make the grade, and his numbers with Mainz are not exactly mindblowing.
He might be flavour of the moment and that is why the story has come about, but I’d be surprised if Wenger pounced on someone after just half a season of impressive form. |
