Honda for handling and driving fun , Toyota for more comfort but isolate between driver and car. I drive 4 x Honda before and now BMW, very similar driving experience.

My dad and my brother both owns Toyota. Honestly other than regular oil change once every 6 months, they run forever!
And I owned a Honda Civic for the past 7 years, there were some minor issue, but it's really minor, nothing related to mechanical.
I would say both are the top 2 Japanese brand i would consider buying.
