English translation of the original
. Z7 Y3 V- g' _9 w% {& A9 B2 t0 u' S( etvb now,tvbnow,bttvbThe original song was written in 1933 by two Hungarians, Rezso Seress (music)
  P+ b! a+ M# L# E9 Y" E$ U% k5 O% mtvb now,tvbnow,bttvband Laszlo Javor (lyrics), and consisted of the first two stanza

as Zoe Orosz from Hungary pointed out to me.
8 x' |3 A6 p* ^9 e8 r, r# tZoe added: tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb# D: n- d/ ]7 j7 F
Actually, the second part of the song in Hungarian is not so reassuring at all.
It is if at all possible, much gloomier than the first two stanzas, almost apocalyptic. tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb5 R7 C- s, Z- _0 M
It looks like the pessimism of the song was too much for the translators and they made their translation a happier one. 5 l( p! e* ]- C) r& M! {& p* s: [
In that case one might argue that the translator has done a bad job
5 Z7 T/ v+ i9 n+ x5 Vand 'ruined' the song, or in other words: a translator has to maintain the original spirit
& K& q! ~5 n4 {1 y. ]2 K# }公仔箱論壇and intentions of the song. On the other hand, 5.39.217.77:88989 S* Y9 P# \# J- w2 o* j
a translator may also be more than just a translator and based on the original create a new song.
0 b1 A1 n3 `8 Z5.39.217.77:8898Perhaps the Sam Lewis mentioned in the credits is responsible for this. 公仔箱論壇  y, R% L2 t- H* p; T" ?" Q2 J

Zoe Orosz also made a translation into English of the original Hungarian song, adding:
4 U1 F2 X) b& L) s$ U. cIt looks like Javor wrote the first part and Seress the second. It is very-very gloomy.
It seems to refer to the horrors of a war at the end. 公仔箱論壇" m- z6 A8 l: F& D" V: J4 b7 y5 Y8 @* P
I'm glad that there's an English version that makes it less terrible. To be honest, 公仔箱論壇, ~) Z& p2 o# ~9 A$ c) V) p: f6 j
I don't think it was ruined at all. We are a very pessimistic people, tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb4 Z& ^4 t' ], W' m& `
so maybe it was good after all that it was not made popular in its original form. ( f1 F+ p3 Q$ A$ `5 Q
- E6 j/ U) v- |- y
The war Zoe mentions could be the First World War, as the song originates from the 1930s. : ~3 T. z  `8 Y2 ^
But since the second part of the song is even more gloomy than the first part,
/ q, l0 `& A6 Q8 m4 q' b, g2 x, _the second part may have been added after the Second World War.

# B" q! q# I, d6 SSomeone said that:
, u' K' X+ U& `' h9 n公仔箱論壇I like this song very much! It is a little jazzy, and Sarah's singing and the music create the right mood for the song.
One thing is very strange, though. The mood changes between the second and the third stanza,
' y* K* h# H1 H' gbecause she wakes up and realises that the gloomy first two stanzas were nothing but a dream and the third stanza is then more chearful. # ]% l) @( @7 `
This change of mood is strangely rather abrupt:
& O4 H3 m2 \9 t# }% r3 W9 Sthe pause is less than a second -- Sarah has barely enough time to catch her breath.
! z! C9 y# r/ m2 {0 R! l8 O% Z# ttvb now, tvbnow, bttvbI would have expected the change in mood between stanzas two and three to be build up a little more gradually,
  H7 r8 h2 |* m5 r8 `4 K5 Gin five to ten seconds or so. After all, waking up and realising that it was a dream takes time. ' n: A: d! E& k4 q  C9 p4 _
Hazan suggested that the last stanza could still be part of the dream: the singer has lost her lover, 公仔箱論壇' O- F- v5 K6 O* M  g
continues her mourning in her dream, and as a reaction to the pain wishes it was all but a dream: . g% B+ g+ }/ W. W) k
