Despite doing his chances some good by accepting, along with several other players, an invitation to attend the final World Cup qualifying match against Belarus at Wembley in November, the forward admits his World Cup hopes are fast disappearing.
"It's been a long time since I was in the England squad," Owen told BBC Radio 5 live. "You never give up but it's probably a long shot in racing terms."
Last night, Capello flew to Johannesburg for Fifa's World Cup pre-tournament workshop in Sun City. The England manager is expected to travel to England’s planned World Cup base in Rustenburg this afternoon, amid reports the venue remains a long way from completion with only 108 days to go before the tournament begins.
The FA have played down concerns about the progress made and claim Capello's priority today will be to assess the condition of the training pitches, which were poor enough to force the Italian to consider alternative venues after his last visit in December. |
