I'm using canon 5dmk2. Both nikon and canon has great cameras. See your friends using which brand and get the same brand. Then you can borrow and try lenses before deciding on lenses to buy yourself

Personally I prefer Canon... Because I got a lot of Canon fans can share lens & Info :)
But Nikon image processor will be sligthly bigger than Canon.
For Beginer & Entry go for Canon 600D
If you are mid range go for Canon 60D
If you need something really good quality go for 5D markII or higher range 1D

How about your friends and relatives?  Select the brand according to the majority users.  My brother wanted to buy one during X'mas.  His friends suggested Sony and Pentax because they are cheap.  I told him that he must choose Canon. Since I have 8 canon lens, he can use my lens to explore photo shooting.  Eventually, he selected 600D.
