Onekotan is in Russia’s Kuril Islands between Japan and the tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula. The islands were formed by volcanic activity 4 N3 Q% w0 ?0 @, K% @6 W' X. u5 J- \
caused by the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate. Subduction can also generate some of the largest earthquakes 3 m/ B3 S9 K8 ~- C, k  u
