事實上，當馬航MH370客機失去聯絡後，多國即時在馬來西亞一帶海域作出搜索，隨著後來有證據顯示，飛機起飛後曾經掉頭，搜索範圍擴大到馬六甲海峽去，以至後來再轉移至印度洋。而背後提供有關搜索方向及證據的，就有英國空難調查處及國際海事衞星公司（Inmarsat），兩者透過「從未使用過的分析方法」，估算出飛機的飛行路線。

7 k6 n3 g2 U' I9 B1 s( E8 |不過，有關的「推算」，由於掌握的資料所限，因而是有可能出現誤差的，包括有關方面在計算時，是假設飛機以自動巡航速度即大概350節（約合648公里/時）飛行。而由於按MH370的位置和剩餘的油量，英國空難調查處認為，在偏遠的南印度洋海域中，油量可達範圍內根本沒有可供飛機降落的島嶼，故認為飛機極大可能墜毀，而馬來西亞政府隨後更單方面宣布飛機確認墜毀這個其實是推斷出來的事實。
