敦煌飛天是敦煌莫高窟的名片，是敦煌藝術的標誌，也可以說是世界美術史上的一個奇跡。只要看到優美的飛天，人們就會想到敦煌莫高窟藝術。敦煌莫高窟492個洞窟中，幾乎窟窟畫有飛天。總計4500餘身。其數量之多，是全世界和中國佛教石窟寺院中，保存飛天最多的石窟。敦煌飛天以其獨特的藝術形式，一直延續和發展著。他的藝術效果在今天的人們看來早已經超出了原先的宗教內涵，成為了讓全世界都為之癡迷的一種藝術表現。

All through days in great povery, having very little and in lacking. Undergone endless nights of hush conditions, trying to make ends meet each and every night with nothing to lean on to, nothing to lay theid backs, not knowing if tomorrow the sun would shine brighter or the skies any bluer.& u* {7 Z/ @% l+ n& C

Only one hope and one heart desire, to leave some footsteps behind for us to know of their existence. And print their name in the history which they now know they did infact accomplished their goals and defeated fate, claiming a place and a recognition they well deserved.

飛天，是佛教中乾闥婆和緊那羅的化身。乾闥婆，意譯為天歌神、緊那羅，意譯為天樂神。原是古印度神話中的娛樂神和歌舞神，是一對夫妻，後被佛教吸收為天龍八部眾神之一。乾闥婆的任務是在佛國裏散發香氣，為佛獻花、供寶，棲身於花叢，飛翔於天宮。緊那羅的任務是在佛國裏奏樂、歌舞，但不能飛翔于雲霄。後來，乾闥婆和緊那羅相混合，男女不分，職能不分，合為一體，變為飛天。現在，把早期在天宮奏樂的叫“天宮伎樂”，把後來持樂器歌舞的稱“飛天伎樂”。敦煌飛天的風格特徵是不長翅膀，不生羽毛，借助雲彩而不依靠雲彩，而是憑藉飄曳的衣裙，飛舞的彩帶淩空翱翔。千姿百態，千變萬化。這是在本民族傳統的基礎上，吸收、融合了外來飛天藝術的成就，發展創作出來的敦煌飛天形象。

飛天的千姿百態

敦煌飛天的名稱由來佛教中把化生到凈土天界的神慶人物稱為“天”，如“大梵天”、“功德天”、“善才天”、“三十三天”等。唐藏中雲：“外國呼神亦為天。”佛教中把空中飛行的天神稱為飛天。飛天多畫在佛教石窟壁畫中，道教中把羽化升天的神話人物稱為“仙”，如“領先仙”、“天仙”、“赤腳大仙”等，把能在空中飛行的天神稱為飛仙。宋《太平禦覽》卷622引《天仙品》中雲：“飛行雲中，神化輕舉，以為天仙，亦雲飛仙。”8 m7 u3 |+ x' v1 H9 G0 G; j

飛仙多畫在墓室壁畫中，象徵著墓室主人的靈魂能羽化升天。佛教傳入中國後，與中國的道教交流融合。在佛教初傳不久的魏晉南北朝時，曾經把壁畫中的飛天亦稱為飛仙，是飛天、飛仙不分。後業隨著佛教在中國的深入發展，佛教的飛天、道教的飛仙雖然在藝術形象上互相融合，但在名稱上，只把佛教石窟壁畫中的空中飛神樂為飛天。敦煌飛天就是畫在敦煌石窟中的飛神，後來成為敦煌壁畫藝術的一個專用名詞。
