大佛禅院原名大佛寺(民间又称大佛殿)，原址位于峨眉山市区东郊，明代无穷国师开创，历时15年建成。寺院占地300余亩，拥有多重大殿、140多间禅房。因寺内大悲殿供奉了一尊高12米的千手千眼观世音菩萨铜像，明万历皇帝的母亲慈圣皇太后特意赐寺名“大佛寺”。5.39.217.77:8898; m* @% |8 n( J; ]" n! g

民国28年(1939年)，抗日战争期间，为避日机轰炸，国民政府将故宫博物院的文物运到峨眉，保管于大佛寺内，派兵把守。1958年“大炼钢铁”时，千手千眼观世音菩萨铜像被毁炼钢，寺院由此消失。" D9 l3 Q, a) H  f

1993年5月23日，峨眉山市人民政府以（1993）64号文件，批准峨眉山佛教协会“在原大佛殿旧址恢复大佛殿”。后因原址建筑群过于密集，拆迁难度很大，且寺院规模受到限制，于是，市政府又于1995年批准峨眉山佛教协会筹资在城南郊白塔山购地226亩，恢复重建大佛寺。峨眉山佛教协会根据普贤道场的文化内涵以及峨眉山佛教文化发展的需要，经过反复讨论和认真研究，报请政府批准，决定将大佛寺改名为“大佛禅院”。tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb( k7 f- ]; S0 g8 r7 _! b

1996年4月6日（观世音菩诞辰日），峨眉山佛教协会在峨眉城南白塔山上举行了大佛禅院洒净奠基法会。法会由宽明法师、永寿法师、通孝法师主坛，省、乐山市、峨眉山市的有关领导和来自省内外的高僧大德、诸山长老以及十方信众共5000多人参加了法会。恢复大佛禅院的消息经多方媒体报道后，引起了社会的广泛关注，恢复工作得到了十方信众的积极支持。经过紧张的准备，1998年3月19日（普贤菩萨诞辰日），大佛禅院恢复工程正式破土动工，禅院建在原大佛寺的“佛塔”处，峨眉城区南面的护城河外。公仔箱論壇' r& x) r8 H5 d7 }& {* @! l

在大佛禅院的恢复建设过程中，峨眉山佛教协会统一了思想，形成了共识：大佛禅院在历史上是著名的十方丛林寺院，恢复后的禅院必须重现昔日的辉煌和庄严，必须经得起历史的检验，要集中人力、物力、精力和智慧，把大佛禅院建成规模大、质量好、建筑品位高、佛文化浓郁、能传承很多年的精品寺庙，使之成为峨眉山朝圣游的重要组成部分。tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb( t. D+ L) N* d" E: \* ~

大佛禅院山门东开，十大殿十一个天井，由东向西井然有序。大光明楼药师殿坐南朝北，面向市区佛光南路，为大佛禅院引门，明清式城楼建筑，是禅院的北面入口。禅院占地400余亩，建筑面积5．6万平方米，为朝拜峨眉山的第一门户，亚洲最大的十方丛林之一，成为集培育僧才、专精修证、佛学研究、弘法利生等于一体的无上道场。6 G4 N. l" J2 |$ P* ~; f

大佛禅院座西向东，整体布局分为三大功能区域：北面（临市区）是佛教朝拜区，即宗教仪式空间，中部是佛教园林文化共享区，南面为佛教院校教育区，即四川佛学院。

A little disappointed cos the pictures were more of the monks and not many on the temple itself, except the temple on the outside. The pictures don't show much of what I expected to see of the Grand Temple. If it were not for the Title, I would take for granted like any other temple.

The temple is magnificent and splendid,the huge thousand hands Kwan-Yin statue here is a focus.The temple here is a place for marriage ceremony,from the pictures we can see the senior buddhist are leading the ceremony processing .
