Avram Grant left Chelsea on good terms, it has been revealed. The Mirror says where Grant was claimed to have walked out in cold fury after an angry bust-up over being offered a pay cut, demanding the lawyers sort out the details of his settlement, the truth was very different.
Grant did not like what he was hearing from Roman Abramovich, and believed he had earned the right to build his own team, rather than having to work with the players inherited from Jose Mourinho.
But it ended with a drink, a smile, and a joke and with the Israeli convinced that he will be remembered as the man who built the platform for what Chelsea can be in future.
Grant would have been given a bumper pay rise if he had taken the opportunity to return to his former job as director of football, £4million per year.
Instead, he walked out with a pay-off nearer £1m than £2m. For Grant it was not about money.
It was about pride.
Close friends revealed: "It is ridiculous to say that Avram was angry. It's just not right.
"Roman rang him and asked him to come to his house for a meeting. When he got there, he was asked to go back to being director of football, for a huge pay rise.
"The conversation was pleasant. It was not a negative atmosphere at all.
"Roman tried to persuade Avram to stay at the club, reminding him how much he loved Chelsea, and that he hadn't come to the club to be manager in the first place.
"But Avram has always believed that you have to be true and honest to yourself, that you have to keep your integrity. If you lose that, you cannot stay anywhere. For Avram, he had to leave."作者: billow 時間: 2008-5-27 12:47 AM
