It is believed that Socotra got its name from Sanskrit, meaning “Island of Bliss.” Others suggest the name was derived from Arabic and means “dripping frankincense.” It may be a bit of both, currently unspoiled by man, but most people know of Socotra as being “the most alien-looking place on Earth.” It’s like a whole another world, like a different dimension。

The island was recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a world natural heritage site in July 2008.

索科特拉島,印度洋西部一群島，屬也門哈達拉毛省領土。其位置在阿拉伯半島以南約350公里，非洲之角以東，阿拉伯海與亞丁灣的交接處。該群島由4島組成，群島面積3650平方公里，主島面積3635平方公里。2008年，聯合國教科文組織將該地列入世界遺產名錄，登錄名稱為索科特拉群島。公仔箱論壇# T1 ?( h/ B! `1 q! q! [
島上人口以阿拉伯人為主，說索科特拉語，主要城鎮Hadiboh人口約43000人，有機場。棗椰、煙草、畜牧業和漁業是島上經濟支柱。6 B1 M7 j" q: j
根據島上的記載，早在公元52年，島民就已經在聖多馬的指引下皈依基督教。1507年，葡萄牙人來到島上，幫助島民擺脫了阿拉伯半島上伊斯蘭教國家的控制，但是4年以後葡萄牙人離開該島，使得島民又重新淪為Mahra蘇丹的臣民。1886年，同Mahra蘇丹國一道歸入英國保護，成為英國在印度洋上的重要基地。

龍血樹號稱是地球上最長壽的樹種之一，最高齡可達6千歲，主要生長在非洲和亞洲南部等熱帶地區；其外型如同漏斗一般，可以有效接住每一滴雨水，而枝幹則像是渠道，將雨水導入樹根，因此即使在乾旱無雨的索科特拉島，它也能夠完全適應。公仔箱論壇, n# e8 A$ \* \" Z3 \. P; t9 G
