在中國大陸，名字叫“胡佳”的人或許有成千上萬。但到目前為止，具有毫無爭議的國際知名度的胡佳可以説只有兩位。一位是跳水運動員胡佳，一位是人權和環保活動家胡佳。

前一位胡佳現在幾乎完全淡出公眾視野。後一位胡佳則被中國當局強行排除在公眾視野之外。中國大陸政府控制的媒體不得自行報導剛剛服刑三年半之後獲釋回家與妻女團聚的胡佳。

體育用品公司阿迪達斯定做的跳水運動員胡佳的廣告海報在那時的北京街頭非常惹眼：“與胡佳一起2008 / 沒有不可能 / Impossible is Nothing”。然而，在北京奧運會臨近之際，胡佳是否能參加奧運會成為懸念。

與此同時，人權和環保活動家胡佳在北京一家中級“人民法院”被秘密審判，同年4月3日以“煽動顛覆國家政權罪”被判刑三年半。在此之前，胡佳被長期軟禁在家，與妻子經常受到當局人員的騷擾，甚至毆打。

6月28日，日本主要報紙《讀賣新聞》發表駐北京記者關泰晴的報導説，“人權活動家胡佳（37歲）以煽動顛覆國家政權罪被判刑3年零6個月，26日刑滿出獄，在北京同家人一起被軟禁在家。在28日的例行記者會上，中國外交部新聞司副司長洪磊表示，胡佳現在依然處於政治權利被剝奪狀態，根據公安機關的決定，在剝奪期間不能接受採訪，必須接受有關部門的監督、管理和觀察。”

Hu Jia a enfin retrouvé sa liberté dimanche, à Pékin. En avril 2008, ce dissident chinois de 37 ans avait été condamné à trois ans et demi de détention et une année supplémentaire de privation de ses droits politiques. La cour l'avait alors rendu coupable "d'incitation à la subversion contre la souveraineté de l'Etat" pour ses liens avec les médias étrangers et ses articles accusant le régime. Fervent opposant au Parti communiste, Hu Jia est connu pour son action en faveur de l'environnement et pour sa défense des droits des malades atteints du sida et des droits de l'homme en général. Il avait particulièrement irrité le pouvoir en critiquant l'attribution des Jeux Olympiques à Pékin. "Il faut être loyal envers sa conscience", a t-il affirmé à Hong Kong Cable TV le jour même de sa libération, défiant l'interdiction de donner des interviews qui lui est imposée. 4 s" S. En effet, Hu Jia n'a pas retrouvé sa pleine liberté. "Freer, not free", "plus libre qu'avant mais pas totalement libre", selon les termes utilisés par ses partisans. Il ne peut ni communiquer avec les médias ni faire de discours, voter, former une association ou participer à un rassemblement. Le dissident a retrouvé l'assignation à résidence à laquelle il était déjà soumis avant son arrestation. L'accès à sa maison dans l'Ouest de Pékin est interdit et une zone d'un kilomètre autour de son domicile est contrôlée par la police.

Human Rights in China affirme qu'il n'a pas été autorisé à se rendre à l'église le dimanche de sa libération et que certains de ses amis ont également été assignés à résidence. "La stratégie des autorités semble être de couper toute connexion et tout communication entre les défenseurs des droits", estime l'organisation.

Dans un tel contexte, le courage d'Hu Jia préoccupe sa famille. Sa femme Zeng Jinyan a d'abord annoncé sur Twitter que son mari était "sain et heureux" malgré son hépatite B chronique aggravée par la détention. Mais elle s'inquiète du futur. "Pour le moment, je souhaite que tout reste calme. Je suis inquiète du fait que donner des interviews à ce stade lui poserait des problèmes. Soyez compréhensifs", a t-elle demandé à l'agence Reuters. Dans un message posté la semaine dernière sur internet, elle déclarait souhaiter que son mari s'occupe en priorité de sa santé et de sa famille, dont sa petite fille de 3 ans, pour éviter d'être arrêté à nouveau.+ Z% N5 J) d2 G0 A" I3 c! }

Une angoisse partagée par le père et la mère d'Hu Jia. "Vis une vie ordinaire, ne te fâche pas avec le régime, parce qu'il est très cruel et il viole la dignité des citoyens arbitrairement", auraient-il demandé à leur fils. Considérés comme des opposants, ses parents ont eux-même été victimes d'une campagne de répression du Parti communiste, alors dirigé par Mao, en 1957. Hu Jia, despite his slight build, had a reputation as a fearless human rights advocate and critic when he was handed his 3½ year jail sentence, plus one year of “deprivation of political rights,” in April, 2008.

How the government will administer the year of “deprivation,” and whether it will extend to Hu Jia’s use of social networking median — indeed, how Hu Jia will respond — is not yet clear.
“Much will depend on the instructions that local police handlers will be given about how to manage Hu Jia during the coming year,” says Joshua Rosenzweig, senior researcher with the Dui Hua Foundation, a not-for-profit body that advocates for prisoners of conscience in China.

“Everyone is watching at the moment,” Rosenzweig said. “Are they going to do something like they did to lawyer Chen Guangcheng and basically keep him imprisoned in his home with his family?”

A major figure in China's dissident community, Hu advocated a broad range of civil liberties before he was imprisoned in 2008. Activists welcomed the releases but said the international community should not take the developments as signs of softening in the government's attitude toward its critics, noting that Hu was freed only after he had completed his 3 1/2-year sentence for sedition. Ai was never formally indicted and was mysteriously released under a form of bail that restricts suspects' movements to their home city for one year.4 U$ Q' p# h( ]7 Q
Activists also note that many once-vocal activist lawyers and dissidents who were rounded up in the government crackdown that started in February have been silent since their release. Hu was dropped off at his Beijing home in the early hours of Sunday morning, apparently to evade media attention, and on the day of his return, dozens of police and plainclothes security patrolled the compound where the couple live.( B0 C: k9 y; F  P3 r7 {6 ^+ _3 e
In a brief phone interview with Hong Kong's Cable TV on Sunday, Hu, too expressed concern about hostility from the authorities though he indicated he would not give up his work., Q0 z5 m. F. f6 s9 D
"(My parents) have told me to just be a normal citizen and don't confront the system because this system is very cruel, using the country's absolute power to violate people's dignity without restraint. But I can only tell my parents I will be careful," Hu said.
Another activist, Chen Guangcheng, and his wife have been kept under an unofficial house arrest in their village in eastern China since he was released from jail last fall, and reporters trying to visit them have been kept away by thugs who patrol the village.
Such illegal detentions mean China is moving further away from international norms on human rights, said Human Rights Watch senior Asia researcher Nicholas Bequelin.
"The Chinese government used to tell diplomats that they were handling things according to law whenever a dissident was arrested. They would justify it. And we would not agree with the justification. China's state-run Global Times newspaper, meanwhile, lambasted the Western media's coverage of Hu's release, saying that they were "making a saint" out of Hu, a person the paper said is unknown to most Chinese people.
