Thepoint guard position is an area of concern because of Derek Fisher'sage, but between Shannon Brown and Jordan Farmar the Lakers should havetheir lead guard of the future. With a team that is better than the onethat won it all last season the Lakers will once again be the champs inthe Pacific along with the odds on favorite to win it all.

| Player:Kobe Bryant. The Lakers always have Kobe to turn to as one of the mostpotent scorers in league history. As the team's roster has improved, LAhasn't needed to rely quite so much on Bryant's offense but he's stillthe focal point. Kobe can score anywhere on the floor. Last season heaveraged 26.8 points which was his lowest since the 03/04 season but on46.7% shooting which was his most efficient since 01/02. As always, thekey for the Lakers is finding the right balance between Bryant'sdominance and the complete team game.

Top Defensive Player: RonArtest. This is somewhat speculative in that Artest hasn't played asingle game yet with the Lakers. The team had been itching to acquireRon for a number of years specifically because of his ability as adefender. He's stronger than Ariza, which should benefit the Lakersagainst bigger, more physical power forwards like LeBron James, PaulPierce and Carmelo Anthony. While Trevor did an adequate job, he wasoften over matched and the Lakers were forced to gear their defensivescheme accordingly. The hope is Ron can hold his own without help,which should enable the rest of the team to stay at home with their men– or give aid elsewhere. When focused, Bryant has been LA's bestdefender on the perimeter. Both Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol have theirstrengths in the post. Odom has been the team's top option on mobilefours while Gasol has the edge over Lamar against power players. Theteam is also hoping that Andrew Bynum, now healthy, can developdefensively into a stopper.

Top Playmaker: KobeBryant. While Kobe is the team's top scorer, he's also the leader inassists (4.9 a game). One of LA's greatest strengths is the triangleoffense. The Lakers don't rely on a traditional point guard and sinceBryant is so ball-dominant, he's going to have plenty of opportunity toset up his teammates. General Manager Mitch Kupchak has fielded aroster full of players who know how to move the ball. Players likeGasol, Odom, Derek Fisher, Jordan Farmar, Artest and Luke Walton areall willing passers. With so many skilled teammates, Bryant's assistnumbers down slightly last season but then so were his turnovers (2.6 agame).

Kobe can score from mid-range, inside the paint andfrom behind the arc. He's always a threat. In recent years it's becomemore difficult for Kobe to get an open look in end-game, out-of-boundssituations. Teams are throwing multiple defenders at him before he evengets the ball. This is where the Lakers need someone else to step intothat role. As the Orlando Magic saw in the NBA Finals, Derek Fisher isalso capable of hitting the clutch shots. Other players who hit big,late baskets or free throws last year were Gasol and Odom.

The Unheralded Player: ShannonBrown. When the Lakers traded Vladimir Radmanovic to the CharlotteBobcats last season, it was thought the target was Adam Morrison. Whilefinancial flexibility was the primary motivation of the deal, theLakers were thrilled to get Brown in the mix. Brown is a 6'4" guard(generously listed, he's barley 6'3" in shoes) who proved to be a veryvaluable piece of the puzzle in LA's championship run. Shannon is avery capable defender at either guard position. Offensively he doesn'thave true point guard skills but is well suited for the triangle. Heprovided big moments in the Western Conference Finals against ChaunceyBillups, especially in Game 5. Brown is also arguably the team's mostathletic player, something they need with Ariza off to Houston. Shannonsurprised with an accurate outside shot, hitting 12-25 from three(48.0%) through 21 postseason games. Brown may earn the primary reserverole in the backcourt behind both Fisher and Bryant.

Best New Addition: RonArtest. The Lakers have only one new addition with a guaranteedcontract so even if Artest was the last man on the end of the bench –he'd probably earn this designation regardless. Ron is a formerDefensive Player of the Year who at almost 30 years old is still in hisprime. Last year he averaged 17.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.3 assistsa night for the Rockets. While his overall shooting percentage was onlyaverage (40.1%), he was particularly sharp from three (39.9%). Itremains to be seen how he'll fit in. Ron's shot selection has beenquestionable throughout his career but the Lakers believe you win ringswith defense first. There are so many scorers; the offense will takecare of itself. Jackson is willing to let the players work out shotdistribution, so long as the ball keeps moving. Assuming the Lakers arehealthy, Artest is the only significant change since last June. He'salready told fans to place the blame on him if LA doesn't repeat.

He's struggled at times for focus butif he can concentrate on being the team's top rebounder and defenderoff the bench, the Lakers should have the necessary depth off thebench.

But, I also knowthat you are more prepared and experienced that second year to travelthat road again. But it's all a forward focus, and that's why webrought in Ron to make our defense even better and give us moreoffensive versatility when we need it. We didn't stand pat as anorganization, and you can't stand pat as players. Kobe, we can starthaving those Michael discussions if you can lead this team to anotherchampionship. Pau, Andrew, Lamar – let's lead the league in reboundingand be the most dominant, versatile front line in the NBA. Our pointguard play has to be consistent, and we're counting on you three guysto push each other to give us that every night. The Burning Question 急需要解决的问题 | WillRon Artest fill Trevor Ariza's shoes? Offensively Ron needs morecoddling (touches, etc). Defensively he's bigger and stronger thanAriza, but can he fight his way as effectively through picks and stickto lightning quick guards as well as Trevor? The Lakers are still arelatively young group but they're not kids anymore. Ariza'sathleticism was a tremendous asset and while Ron is gifted, he's not ashigh a flyer as Trevor was. Additionally Ron has had his share ofincidents, most notably the infamous brawl in Detroit when he was withthe Indiana Pacers. Artest has been busy all summer on Twitter,You-Tube, etc. He's someone who craves media attention. Will he be adistraction? Phil Jackson has some experience in this area with histime in Chicago coaching Dennis Rodman, but already it's a differentworld with the advancements in social media. With Artest on the Lakers– win or lose it will be interesting to watch.
