For those of you with error 0x8000404 try uninstalling all Windows Live products you have installed on your computer.

When you try to update Windows live messenger, it gets to 100% and then the install starts rolling back. After it rolls back you get this error: Messenger A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file installer…
To fix this, download the Windows Installer Clean-up http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe
After you install the utility, run it and remove all Windows Live items.
Restart your computer and update Live Messenger again.
