Manchester United completed the swoop for Wimbledon youngster Martin in December 2003 for a fee worth up to a £1million.
United paid an initial £200,000 for the midfielder, 16 at the time, who was also being courted by Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool. Martin was spotted by Sir Alex Ferguson playing for the Dons' Under-17 and Under-19 sides.
A skillful, attacking midfielder - he is confident on the ball and has an eye for goal.
He made his United debut in October 2005, starting the 4-1 Carling Cup victory over Barnet before being replaced by Darron Gibson on 75 minutes.
The player was loaned to Belgian sister club Royal Antwerp for the remainder of the season when the transfer window re-opened in January 2006.
Martin was loaned to Scottish side Rangers at the beginning of the 2006/07 season, to continue his development under the watchful eye of Paul le Guen.
He impressed early season before suffering a minor knee injury. A return to Old Trafford ended when he was loaned out to Stoke City where made 13 appearances for the Potters as they missed out on the play-offs. Martin did get the chance to score his first senior goal in a 2-1 win over Southampton.
Another loan spell came in October 2007 when he joined Plymouth for three months, scoring twice in 12 matches. And in January he moved to Sheffield United for the remainder of the season though struggled at Bramall Lane.
Nottingham Forest took the player on a further loan in August 2008 until the end of the year.
