) _' A3 r* i* M2 C0 wPelagus National Park has only very recently been gazetted as a National Park. It is located deep in the heart of Sarawak, up the mighty Rejang River. Although relatively small, the Park surrounds the famous Pelagus Rapids, which have always made (and still do) travel further up into the interior of Sarawak something of an adventure. The rapids are also very beautiful and dramatic, located in a steep green valley, cut by the awe-inspiring strength of the Rejang River (it's amazing watching express boats trying to navigate their way up through the trecherous rocks). Other than the rapids, the park features some wonderful mixed dipterocarp rainforest, with ain interesting variety of trees and wildlife - including rhinoceros hornbills and macaque monkeys.

Miri is a popular dive destination due to an abundance of pristine patch reefs. The Miri-Sibuti Coral Reef National Park, lying at depths ranging from 7 to 30 metres has an average visibility of 10 to 30 metres. There are also some interesting wreck dives. The nearest dive site is a mere ten minutes from the marina bay jetty. One can  land in Miri and be in water two hours later.

Sama Jaya was formerly known as Stutong Protected Forest, one of the oldest protected areas in Sarawak, having been constituted in 1950. The park is designed to provide an authentic urban wilderness, with all its facilities and activities integrated into the natural forest environment. The first urban forestry project undertaken by Sarawak Forestry, Sama Jaya’s primary objective is to promote multiple uses of forests through encouraging outdoor recreation, nature conservation education and nature-based tourism; creating a reserve and refuge for urban wildlife; and conserving a “Green Island” for Kuching city.

Due to the comparatively soft and soluble nature of limestone, and the intense tropical rainfall of the region, the whole of the Bau Formation is intersected with caves. Whilst many caves of the Bau Formation are remote and inaccessible, the Wind Cave is within easy reach of Kuching and is a popular day trip and picnic destination. The Wind Cave Nature Reserve covers 6.16 hectares and includes the cave itself and the surrounding forest.

Since 1975 the center has been accepting animals either orphaned, injured, or rescued from captivity and reintroducing them back into the wild. The Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is not a zoo; unless quarantined, the animals are not kept in cages and are free to roam about the thick, green forest canopy.

The Ayer Hitam forest reserve in Puchong is one of the most precious tracts of remaining lowland dipterocarp forest in highly urbanized Selangor state. Originally covering 4270 hectares and gazetted as a forest reserve way back in 1906, it has suffered from a series of de-gazettements throughout the years, until it is now only some 1200 hectares. Even this is being reduced as I speak, as developers continue to quietly eat away at the borders of the reserve. The forest is now totally surrounded by “concrete jungle”.
