敦煌飛天是敦煌莫高窟的名片，是敦煌藝術的標誌，也可以說是世界美術史上的一個奇跡。只要看到優美的飛天，人們就會想到敦煌莫高窟藝術。敦煌莫高窟492個洞窟中，幾乎窟窟畫有飛天。總計4500餘身。其數量之多，是全世界和中國佛教石窟寺院中，保存飛天最多的石窟。敦煌飛天以其獨特的藝術形式，一直延續和發展著。他的藝術效果在今天的人們看來早已經超出了原先的宗教內涵，成為了讓全世界都為之癡迷的一種藝術表現。

飛天，是佛教中乾闥婆和緊那羅的化身。乾闥婆，意譯為天歌神、緊那羅，意譯為天樂神。原是古印度神話中的娛樂神和歌舞神，是一對夫妻，後被佛教吸收為天龍八部眾神之一。乾闥婆的任務是在佛國裏散發香氣，為佛獻花、供寶，棲身於花叢，飛翔於天宮。緊那羅的任務是在佛國裏奏樂、歌舞，但不能飛翔于雲霄。後來，乾闥婆和緊那羅相混合，男女不分，職能不分，合為一體，變為飛天。現在，把早期在天宮奏樂的叫“天宮伎樂”，把後來持樂器歌舞的稱“飛天伎樂”。敦煌飛天的風格特徵是不長翅膀，不生羽毛，借助雲彩而不依靠雲彩，而是憑藉飄曳的衣裙，飛舞的彩帶淩空翱翔。千姿百態，千變萬化。這是在本民族傳統的基礎上，吸收、融合了外來飛天藝術的成就，發展創作出來的敦煌飛天形象。

飛天的千姿百態

敦煌飛天的名稱由來佛教中把化生到凈土天界的神慶人物稱為“天”，如“大梵天”、“功德天”、“善才天”、“三十三天”等。唐藏中雲：“外國呼神亦為天。”佛教中把空中飛行的天神稱為飛天。飛天多畫在佛教石窟壁畫中，道教中把羽化升天的神話人物稱為“仙”，如“領先仙”、“天仙”、“赤腳大仙”等，把能在空中飛行的天神稱為飛仙。宋《太平禦覽》卷622引《天仙品》中雲：“飛行雲中，神化輕舉，以為天仙，亦雲飛仙。”

飛仙多畫在墓室壁畫中，象徵著墓室主人的靈魂能羽化升天。佛教傳入中國後，與中國的道教交流融合。在佛教初傳不久的魏晉南北朝時，曾經把壁畫中的飛天亦稱為飛仙，是飛天、飛仙不分。後業隨著佛教在中國的深入發展，佛教的飛天、道教的飛仙雖然在藝術形象上互相融合，但在名稱上，只把佛教石窟壁畫中的空中飛神樂為飛天。敦煌飛天就是畫在敦煌石窟中的飛神，後來成為敦煌壁畫藝術的一個專用名詞。
