小印度是新加坡印度族群的聚集地，犹如印度的缩影。在屠妖节（Deepavali），即兴都教光节（Hindu Festival of Lights），小印度被装点成金碧辉煌的神话世界。

在1819年，当莱佛士爵士航行至新加坡时，随行有多名印度助手和士兵，他们便是最早的一批印度移民。之后，更多的印度移民来到了新加坡谋生，而印度族群的聚居地也不断扩大，直至今天的规模。, n; W# e6 `! p+ m2 a; ^& ]/ Q

这里的主干道之一——实龙岗路（Serangoon），是新加坡最古老的马路之一。当时此处还是一大片森林，常有猛兽毒蛇出没，居住在此的人都会敲打铜锣来赶走野兽。用马来语来说，就是“di-serang dengan gong”，久而久之，就演变成了今天的“Serangoon”。

屠妖节是印度教节日。大约在每年的10月或11月，即印历八月见不到月亮后的第十五天举行。又称灯节、点灯节。一说源自克里希纳王战胜纳拉卡苏的故事；另一种说法记载于《罗摩衍那》中，罗摩王子战胜十首魔王罗婆回到阿瑜陀国，众人点灯欢迎，因此有屠妖节。节前要打扫房屋，节日这天要通宵点燃灯火，据说女神拉丝蜜降临到清洁和点灯的家庭祝福。所有的教徒要到寺庙祈祷感恩。大的寺庙的庆祝仪式至少进行5天，每天念诵不同意义的经文。

Little India in s'pore, at Beach Road, it's been history eh..since the chinese emigrated to S'pore ..love the India pancake there, and the Indian fried noodle, not forgetting the Indian Rojak(salad) and of course the Indian Chendol ice..( some kinda of India shave Ice with brown sugar)....oh goodness...you are playing with my taste buds..missing it all !!!!公仔箱論壇# M* L. l+ p& P |% X

There's some truth with regard to your above reasons, but I guess the greatest point is ,..greener pastures over the horizon,..how much truth nobody know until they make the trip and pursue the journey eh.! ( l! Y: t1 I4 s% ^3 b

Like in NY, I think the largest China Town exist here, which when I first set foot on its grounds, my heart just dropped...nothing truth about greener pastures over the horizon...almost devastating and shattering dreams...err..think 5th ave in Manhattan more like it in the movies and closer to every person's dreams.

The so called Little India in Singapore is a very nice place for eating Indian foods,the cost is also cheap. One may spend 60 RM to get your stomach full.
