It is believed that Socotra got its name from Sanskrit, meaning “Island of Bliss.” Others suggest the name was derived from Arabic and means “dripping frankincense.” It may be a bit of both, currently unspoiled by man, but most people know of Socotra as being “the most alien-looking place on Earth.” It’s like a whole another world, like a different dimension。  Z' C8 o. f# Y( Z/ @( Y

Socotra has been tectonically isolated from Africa and Arabia for the past 18 million years, with its fierce heat and drought have combined to create a unique and spectacular endemic flora. Huge number of flora and fauna on Socotra are endemic, i.e., they are found nowhere else on Earth: 37% of Socotra’s 825 plant species, 90% of its reptile species and 95% of its land snail species. The island was recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a world natural heritage site in July 2008.

One of the most striking of Socotra’s plants is the dragon’s blood tree (Dracaena Cinnabari), which is a strange-looking, UFO-shaped tree. The tree is so named because any possible injury to the bark results in a deep red liquid that excretes from the scar.公仔箱論壇$ n# T  F7 }; P
據說樹齡最高可達六千年，其深紅色的樹脂被命名為龍血竭，不但可用於醫藥、染料，也被用於巫術、煉金術與民間魔法。最新的調查報告顯示，氣候緩化令季節性雲量减少，造成索科特拉島水分缺乏，加上外來物種入侵，索科特拉島上幾乎已經沒有了自然生長的龍血樹幼苗。專家預期，或許在100年內，索科特拉島多數龍血樹都會死亡，這一植物將面臨滅絕困境。! ?9 q" v( Z$ {8 J/ x& h, R- H) [
The tree can live to 5000 or 6000 years old. Its red sap was thought to be the dragon’s blood of the ancients, sought after as a medicine and a dye, also inscribe as magical seals and talismans. Some scientists blame a lack of water caused by a decrease in seasonal cloud cover—and predict that many stands could disappear within a century.
在懸崖上的沙漠玫瑰 (Adenium Obesum) 也相當特別，直接嵌進石頭長出來，完全不需要土壤；樹皮則像橡膠一樣閃閃發亮，枝幹頂端還會長出漂亮的粉紅色花朵。
Another famous plant species is Desert Rose (Adenium Obesum) which blooming in spring with a flush of pink flowers, they apparently do not require soil, always magically growing from cliffs and rock-faces, sinking their roots straight into bare rock.  m1 Z$ b2 P: ~  p+ ?/ C

索科特拉島,印度洋西部一群島，屬也門哈達拉毛省領土。其位置在阿拉伯半島以南約350公里，非洲之角以東，阿拉伯海與亞丁灣的交接處。該群島由4島組成，群島面積3650平方公里，主島面積3635平方公里。2008年，聯合國教科文組織將該地列入世界遺產名錄，登錄名稱為索科特拉群島。
島上人口以阿拉伯人為主，說索科特拉語，主要城鎮Hadiboh人口約43000人，有機場。棗椰、煙草、畜牧業和漁業是島上經濟支柱。5.39.217.773 y1 a5 h7 z, g2 l; x! Q5 d
根據島上的記載，早在公元52年，島民就已經在聖多馬的指引下皈依基督教。1507年，葡萄牙人來到島上，幫助島民擺脫了阿拉伯半島上伊斯蘭教國家的控制，但是4年以後葡萄牙人離開該島，使得島民又重新淪為Mahra蘇丹的臣民。1886年，同Mahra蘇丹國一道歸入英國保護，成為英國在印度洋上的重要基地。tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb* v3 z/ g/ X& w& G
1967年，索科特拉島隨南也門獨立。目前，該島是也門的領土。

好特別的地方與植物, 風化缺水是它的不幸也是它的卓越之處, 幸運是它地理上的隔離, 避免了商業化與人為的侵略, 使它仍可維持自然粗獷的景色, 保持其純真自然的美.

龍血樹號稱是地球上最長壽的樹種之一，最高齡可達6千歲，主要生長在非洲和亞洲南部等熱帶地區；其外型如同漏斗一般，可以有效接住每一滴雨水，而枝幹則像是渠道，將雨水導入樹根，因此即使在乾旱無雨的索科特拉島，它也能夠完全適應。
一旦劃開龍血樹的樹皮，便會有鮮紅色的汁液汩汩流出，當地人將這些「龍血」製成染料，或作為治療呼吸道及腸胃問題的藥物；也有巫師會配合儀式和煉金術，用來提升自己的法力。
龍血在中國則被稱為「血竭」，又名「麒麟竭」，是專治跌打損傷的活血聖藥。
