Arsenal’s Gervinho short-listed for African Player-Of-The-Year
There is very little doubt that the ex-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba must be favourite to win this years African-Player-Of-The-Year award after his brilliant contribution in winning the Champions League for his club, as well as helping the Ivory Coast to second place in the African Cup of Nations, but his Ivorian team-mate, Yaya Toure and Gervinho are also touted as possible winners.
The ex-Arsenal Alex Song, who recently moved to Barcelona is also there, as well as Demba Ba and John Obi Mikel from the Premiership who have contributed half of the nominated Top Ten.
The Full short-list of nominees is as follows……
Didier Drogba – Shanghai Shenhua
Yaya Toure – Manchester City
Gervinho – Arsenal
John Obi Mikel – Chelsea
Demba Ba – Newcastle
Younes Belhanda – Montpellier
Christopher Katongo – Henan Jianye
Alexandre Song – Barcelona
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – St Etienne
Andre Ayew – Marseille
There are certainly a lot of talented players on that list, but surely no-one can match Drogba in the trophy-winning department, except perhaps Yaya-Toure who was also brilliant in Man City’s run to the Premiership title. Who thinks that Gervinho could win a place in the Top Three?
