Wenger - We want life to be beautiful for 90 minutes

For years, Arsène Wenger has been portrayed as the guardian of beautiful football - and it is a role he is happy to fulfil.

The manager has always asked his side to play an attractive game but this season Arsenal’s displays have not only won admiration from all quarters but their results have taken them to the top of the Premier League and Champions League Group H. Of course, scorelines are fundamentally important to the Frenchman but a sense of style is close to his purist heart aswell.

“Of course I take pride in the fact that people go home having felt that, for one-and-a-half hours today, life is beautiful,” he said “Basically, that’s why professional football exists.

“As a manager you have to get your personality into your team and try to do it well. After that, well, some people like more direct play. I’ve nothing against that but we play the game I like and my players like.

“You try to have a balance. Sometimes we were criticised for overplaying, not being efficient and being swept away by teams who often make the game physical against Arsenal. So there’s no ideal way.

“But we get compliments when people enjoy watching our team, yes. And that is the biggest compliment you can get. They enjoy watching football, and then go home, and they say they have seen something they like. That is always good.”
