阿森纳官方宣布,26岁的德国国脚、主力中卫默特萨克加盟枪手Arsenal have confirmed a deal has been agreed with Werder Bremen for the signing of defender Per Mertesacker, subject to registration. Skysports.com on Tuesday night revealed the giant centre-back had passed a medical and agreed personal terms at Emirates Stadium, and a settlement, believed to be worth £10million, has now been reached with Bremen.
Mertesacker, a 75-time Germany international, is considered to be a vital piece of Arsene Wenger's Arsenal jigsaw, especially after Sunday's humiliation at Manchester United.
Critics have long suggested the club were in vital need of experience at the heart of their defence, as they seek to end a six-year trophy drought, and the 26-year-old has always been a target.
The deal comes after Wenger decided Bolton's Gary Cahill was too expensive and instead opted to sign Mertesacker, who was in the final year of his contract in Germany.
A statement on Arsenal's official website: "Arsenal has confirmed they have agreed terms with Werder Bremen to sign German international defender Per Mertesacker."
