Van Der Sar - 7.5: World class save in the first half to deny a close range Ivanovic header and then produced a number of stops to deny the Blues in the second. Tried to deny Kalou but his parry fell straight back at the feet of the Ivorian and his goalmouth was finally breached.
O'Shea - 6.0: Put his side in danger early in the game when he lost the ball and was left for dead by Anelka's pace. Generally solid after that.
Vidic - 7.0: Very dominating in the air as ever but did have some tricky moments with Malouda's trickery over the turf. Had to stem a Chelsea tide late in the game and did this well.
Evans - 6.5: Dealt with the Chelsea threat well and formed a solid wall with his Serbian defensive partner.
Fabio - 6.5: One of the rare occasions the Brazilian was selected to start in a big competitive encounter, the youngster made sure he was defensively solid first and foremost and was generally successful in dealing with Kalou on his flank. Taken off for Smalling.
Valencia - 8.0: Frequently employed down his right flank to stretch play and put Chelsea on the back-foot and this he certainly did as Cole had a hard time dealing with him. Left the England international chasing shadows at times and provided the first goal and an assist.
Scholes - 7.5: Would have enjoyed the first half as he was given ample time and space to look up and dictate the movement of the ball around the field. Generally rolled back the years in the second half of the game as well, delivering some spectacular passes.
Carrick - 6.5: Kept things ticking over with simple distribution of the ball during the match, didn't try many Hollywood-style passes which ensured his side didn't lose possession needlessly.
Park - 5.5: Quiet from the Korean who didn't show his usual work-rate and harrying. There is more to Park's game than that, but he didn't show much of that either. Quiet game.
Owen - 5.5: Quiet first half as he lurked deep in the opposition half, conserving his energy to try and break from the shoulder of the Chelsea back-line. Replaced at half-time.
Rooney - 6.5: Quiet game until he latched onto an excellent Scholes lofted ball and produced a dream squared pass to Valencia who was only too happy to gobble it up and smash it into the back of the net. Given a rest after 45 minutes.
Substitutes:
Nani - 6.0: Given a 45-minute run out and looked impressive in spurts. Still needs to work into the excellent form at the end of last season.
Javier Hernandez - 7.0: Mexican starlet has caught the eye during pre-season with his ability to find the back of the net and continued that in this game when he was brought on at half-time, scoring United's second. Seems to have taken to playing for the Red Devil's like a duck to water. Good movement and continues to look very promising.
Berbatov - 7.0: Some good link up with Nani and Chicharito and displayed his usual excellent touch and control during the match. Sublime lob for the third goal capped off a great day for his side.
Smalling - 6.5: Came on for Fabio late on and didn't put a foot wrong.
Giggs - N/A
