BEIJING - A Chinese mountaineering team tookthe Olympic flame to the top of the world Thursday, a spectacular featdreamed up to underscore China’s ambitions for the Beijing games.

H1 l3 Q1 Ltvb now,tvbnow,bttvbTheclimbers could be heard struggling for breath in a live televisionbroadcast as five torchbearers each shuffled a few feet before passingon the flame to the next person. Thefinal torchbearer, a Tibetan woman named Cering Wangmo, stood silentlyon the peak with her torch while other team members unfurled smallChinese and Olympic flags. They then clustered together, cheering “Wemade it,” and “Beijing welcomes you.”
